About this deal

Alfred Wainwright MBE (17 January 1907 – 20 January 1991), who preferred to be known as A. Wainwright [1] or A.W., was a British fellwalker, guidebook author and illustrator. His seven-volume Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells, published between 1955 and 1966 and consisting entirely of reproductions of his manuscript, has become the standard reference work to 214 of the fells of the English Lake District. Among his 40-odd other books is the first guide to the Coast to Coast Walk, a 182-mile (293-kilometre) long-distance footpath devised by Wainwright which remains popular today. Work is now under way to produce a further revision, and this involves some format changes also. Publication commenced in 2015 and further volumes are in course of preparation. Another reason is that many walkers struggle to devise full-day walks using the Wainwright guide books. Yes, he has detailed pretty much every conceivable way of getting to each individual summit, but this leaves the reader having to then come up with their own plan to make a longer day of it by continuing over one or more other fells. Wainwright didn’t describe day walks in these seven guidebooks. In 1972 Wainwright devised the west–east Coast to Coast Walk, as an alternative to the north–south Pennine Way. The Coast to Coast, he declares in his guidebook, which follows the same format as the Pennine Way Companion, "puts the Pennine Way to shame" for scenic beauty, variety and interest. [14] The 190-mile (310-kilometre) route traverses the north of England from St. Bees to Robin Hood's Bay, passing through the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors national parks.

He also runs numerous courses as a mountain instructor and provides guided walks in the area and lives on the eastern fringes of the national park. Because of the nature of the layout of the Lakeland fells, some peaks, such as Fairfield and Hart Crag, appear in more than one chapter. In 2014, it was agreed that the Society should however embark on a project to acquire a copy of every one of AW’s published items, the purpose of which was to try to ensure that a copy of his work was available for the future. We were not interested in which edition or impression was involved although the aim was to acquire a copy which was un-amended from his original publication. Publications ‘about AW’ were not included. However, where there was other material to which he had contributed in some way (e.g. a foreword, an introduction, or the inclusion of drawings which had not been reproduced in his other publications) we included these in our project. The intention was to donate the collection to the Cumbria Archive where it could be inspected and also used for research work.

The Godfather of the Lake District, Albert Wainwright, mapped, documented and published a staggering 214 fells, of varying lengths and climbs, with descriptions so delicately written, you’d think he were a poet. The best route for hill walkers is to start at Ambleside or Rydal and ascend Nab Scar, Heron Pike and Great Rigg to reach the summit of Fairfield. The descent goes like this: Hart Crag, Dove Crag, High Pike and Low Pike to High Sweden Bridge and eventually Ambleside. Of course to fully appreciate the above you really need to possess the guides, they are readily available in most good bookshopsor directly from their publishers Frances Lincoln. The guides have all been updated with a second edition by Chris Jesty.

Such is the artistry of nature,” pens Wainwright in his characteristically poetic way, “such is the mellowing influence of the passing years, that the scars of disarray and decay have been transformed in a romantic harmony, cloaked by a canopy of trees and a carpet of leaves… Naked of trees, Castle Crag would be ugly; with them, it has a sylvan beauty unsurpassed, unique.” The Wainwright Bridge". The Wainwright Society. 10 April 2008. Archived from the original on 12 June 2008 . Retrieved 19 January 2018.John Burland, founder of the Wainwright Society, wrote and devised a dramatic presentation of his life and works which was presented at the Wildman Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse as part of the Ilkley Literature Festival on 15 October 2009. During 2010 and 2011 a further 17 presentations were made. You can do them more than once! Why do we need a guide book on the fells of the Lake District if Wainwright wrote seven of them? Well, I should say right here that this book is not intended to replace Wainwright’s Pictorial Guides. They are superb books. But, they were written in the 1950s and 60s, and yes, some things in the hills have changed in the intervening years.
