compact calm: The same unbeatable drift tranquility, now perfect for smaller spaces; compact 11” diameter means you can enjoy premium calm, even when space is at a premium; adds zen to your desk, console, or side table without taking overThis is a sizeable round display box, mine is nearly 2 ft in diameter, that includes a shallow dusting of sand and a small magnetic ball that traces out insanely intricate patterns in the sand - then it overlays those patterns with new patterns. Watching it in practice is mesmerizing - but figuring things out was a mess!

HoMedics, of course, takes this concept up a notch (or a hundred notches). It transforms what used to be a kid’s toy into a luxury product using high-end materials and app control. The Drift isn’t the first kinetic sand table on the market, but it’s widely available as of its 2022 launch and requires no technical knowledge to set up. (The demand for kinetic sand tables has actually been so high—and so unmet—in recent years that many enthusiasts have shared their DIY tutorials online. However, with woodworking, wiring, and coding components, they’re far from one-day projects.) How to control the HoMedics Drift sand table A manual sand table needs to be thoughtfully designed with a miniature rake. To achieve beautiful results with such a delicate task, the user needs to slowly and carefully plan and execute each movement of the rake, requiring a steady focus. How the HoMedics Drift Sandscape works I bored a 1/2" hole in the center of the circle for the slip ring, and drilled 4 other holes for the screws that will secure the flange bearing to the base. Before securing the flange, you need to insert the slip ring in the 1/2" hole and secure it with wood screws so that the flange and the free-spinning node is facing upwards. I covered the seems of the outside wall by gluing a thin wood sheet, but this can also be done with wood filler and sanding. For the generating and feeding the designs to the Sand Table to draw them, I started out by making my own "movement plans" by hand. I used some movement plans that were generated by Tom Dilatush in his GitHub project JSysiphus. The Sand Table uses (theta, rho) coordinates for movement, so I converted .thr files to .txt and placed all of the files in the "pending" folder of the repository, so that python can easily read them. The "read_files.py" program then converts the coordinates to simple number of steps and speed commands for the stepper motors to perform.

“drift takes you away from the current chaos and into a zone of peace. I keep one in my office to help patients relax.”

Whenever I return to the device and open the app, I have to tell it again which device I have. Really?
