About this deal

I also thought that entire plot (romance, relationships, pacing, and all) was just.... chef's kiss. Really nice. I have no complaints besides a few spots that felt slowly paced. There was a bit of confusion on the actual training done to construct the amulets, and I would have liked more clarification on the process and the magical rules around them. I definitely want more books and concepts about debtera now. Thank you so much to Wednesday Books and Macmillan Audio for providing me with copies to read and review.

I was getting paid to cleanse the house of the Evil Eye, not of dirt, but I would argue that point with Mr. Rochester. “Four people taking care of such an enormous house?” As we’ve moved from the damsel in distress storylines for female characters, we charged full steam ahead into the territory of the “strong female character.” My problem with this characteristic is that some writers tend to create a female character with masculine traits and call it a day. Just change their name, and they could be a man. Oftentimes, these women are emotionless automatons that don’t feel, they just act (or react).I held the woman’s skeptical gaze firmly, secretly praying she wouldn’t ask for it. Nineteen was an adult, according to law. Old enough to live on the streets, to starve daily. But not, in my experience, old enough to be taken seriously by the elder generation. The less she could judge me on, the better. fernandan on Reading The Wheel of Time: Taim Tells Lies and Rand Shares His Plan in Winter’s Heart (Part 3) 3 hours ago In spite of everything, she had such a capacity to give love and I wanted that for her. With this being said, the relationship between Andi and Magnus does tread a bit into Instalove territory; so, if this is a problem for you, you've been forewarned.

as a story about evil spirits and curses, however, this is pretty good. and i think readers who enjoy a good old-fashion exorcism will feel the same way. while the world-building is pretty non-existent, there is still a very spooky atmosphere surrounding the castle and its inhabitants. In terms of world building and fantasy element, i think the book did a great job with this premise. This was unique. This was really something that I would’ve loved so much if not for the book having a main plot of romance which i did not enjoy at all. In terms of character, like ANDI is such a layered character and DAMN I LOVED HER!! I was so excited to know more about her past and stuff and yes i did like what we got from that aspect, but.... yeah magnus ruined everything i hate it here. The book’s pace was fast, whirlwind, heart throbbing and conclusion was well wrapped up as it was expected. Now add in a romance, a ghost story, and a claustrophobic atmosphere on par with Mexican Gothic, and you have a STORY. Okay, so I really tried with this one because when I first heard about this book, I was SO EXCITED. Okay? SO. EXCITED. JANE EYRE is one of my favorite works of classic literature and when I found out that it was going to have Ethiopian elements, I may have screamed. I campaigned so hard for an ARC and DID NOT GET ONE, so I waited like the good book peasant I am for the chance to get a copy with coin.Amazing atmosphere, loved the fresh take on a very different—and minimally inspired—Jane Eyre retelling. Loved the magic components, the haunted house, the Ethiopian-meets-gothic vibes… ahhh so good. overall, a decent debut. definitely some areas that could be improved upon as the author grows, but a pretty eerie story that comes out just in time for halloween. Thus, she finds herself at the cusp of adulthood on her own. She needs to start making her own way. When she gets offered a position to cleanse the mysterious Rochester household of a crippling case of the Evil Eye, she accepts.

But I supposed it made sense. No local would dare step foot in a house so saturated by the Evil Eye. Hiring foreigners who were unfamiliar with the curse guaranteed employees would stay, as long as they were paid well. It was a survival habit Jember had taught me to live by since the age of five: Protect your amulet better than it protects you. I loved characters and the main plot, including all the horror elements and action scenes, but I didn't like the love story. This supposed to be Jane Eyre retelling, and although I can see little similarity in setting (big castle) and ghost who maybe was it's version of captured wife from the Jane Eyre, I can't agree that this is retelling. Andi has a job to do. And as the servants keep disappearing (or worse) and the house creeps closer toward Andi with every breath, the stakes are too high to leave. It’s not much of a spoiler, especially if you’re familiar with Jane Eyre, that Magnus and Andromeda fall in love and end up together. I couldn’t help thinking, however, that Andi could do better. Yes, Magnus is a chocolate magnate and all, but it was hard for me to understand what Andromeda saw in him, as he seemed to spend much of his time whining and waiting for others to save him. The story also touches on how his expectations of what their relationship will be in the future differ from what Andi would like. And there’s no real resolution of that. If there was a sequel, I’d be perfectly happy if the two were no longer together—there’s a whole world out there for Andi, and she doesn’t need a man, and certainly not a man like Magnus, to see it. I looked like a homely, misshapen doll. But at least I didn’t look homeless. The last thing I wanted was Mr. Rochester to know he’d pulled me directly from the street. Some foreign travelers called it “exotic.” Others called it “hell.” The second was accurate, heat-wise. But to look at it? Heaven. Salt and iron crusted the land in yellow and rust, making the desert look alive with magic. But even a wonder like that wasn’t enough to get travelers to pass this way, not anymore.
