About this deal

In the series, Ramsey plays Kelsey, a heroin addict and scam artist who is pregnant with her abusive boyfriend’s child. Bella Ramsey stars in BBC prison drama Time. (BBC)

But right now, Ramsey is settling into their new London life. First up, the fair-weather football fan (“Me and my dad joke about supporting Leicester Rovers”) is keen to find a local team to join. Preferring to participate than watch is very on-brand, they say, also confessing to barely watching any TV. They also love writing music in their downtime, particularly rap. “I used to write raps about the darkest things,” they say, “like about child abuse and sexual assault – I didn’t know about any of that! I was 10! And grew up in a very loving family!” Hair by Earl Simms; Styling by Fabio Immediato; T-shirt, cashmere sweater and trousers by Miu Miu. Photograph: Suki Dhanda/The Observer In this interview, Bella reflects on their experience with clothing in expressing their own gender identity, why “if Eliot Sumner was a gender identity, that’s how [they] would identify.” And, if there is one takeaway, it’s the importance of recognising the current shift and “having more spaces where transmasculine and non-binary people who don’t fit into regular clothes can go and find stuff that fits their body.” What a great campaign to be a part of, how did the collaboration between you and Both& Apparel come about? Clothing has been really important to me and I’ve only been realising that more recently. I need to feel comfortable in what I am wearing to be comfortable in the world. Sometimes if I wear an outfit and it is just not right, it has to be right. If it is not right and I am out and about walking around London, it really has an impact on how I feel. Finding stuff that fits right and how I want it to fit, stuff that is baggy but not too big, is a fine line. I naturally dress quite simply and androgynously. I feel my clothing isn’t really gendered, anyone could wear it. Not that clothing should ever be gendered. What have you found most enjoyable about this project? Such assertiveness has been possible thanks to a great support network, says Ramsey. “My journey has been very cushioned. I have been fortunate to work with people who are fiercely protective of me. I hear horror stories of people in the industry. I’ve had some massive challenges and traumas, as everyone has, but for the most part I’ve felt very safe.”That’s why Ellie’s “sunset on the beach” graphic tee is so fascinating. Not only is it one of the brightest and most distinctive articles of clothing we see any of the major characters in The Last of Us wear, but it ends up revealing quite a lot about Ellie’s character. After all, she’s a young person who never got to see the world as it was before the Cordyceps brain infection ravaged humanity. As we’ve seen throughout The Last of Us (most notable the Left Behind DLC) that means she’s much more fascinated with the world as it was than other people are. That was the reason I loved Both&’s stuff. I was like, ‘Whoa, finally clothing that fits.’ I could not believe there was a brand like that and that Both& seemed to be the brand making specialised clothes. It means a lot to be a part of this campaign and be working with Both&. I hope that it supports Both&’s future and it will continue to grow and develop. Also, that other people will be inspired. It is nice to see things shifting and it is just about having more spaces where transmasculine and non-binary people who don’t fit into regular clothes can go and find stuff that fits their body. Everybody deserves to have clothes that fit their body whether that’s plus-size clothes, petite size clothing or clothing for transmasculine, non-binary people. I love that Both& is not just for the queer community. I have never wanted it to be something that is reserved just for the queer community. That marginalises you more when you’re placed in separation, so I hope that it will be really inclusive and open to everybody. Who have been your major fashion influences and inspirations? Both& Apparel are one of the first brands specifically catering to transmasculine/GNC/non-binary people. What does it mean to see this and be a part of this new movement in fashion to be more inclusive?

I found the actual shoot really fun. The idea for it was that we would use paint on the final look as a campaign and for it to just be a mess. The idea that I’ve been able to think of the concept and for it to come into fruition… To sit in a studio in London with my friends and paint each other and a wall and be messy is the coolest thing. That was very fun, it was a very joyful day. I would say the actual shoot, as it was a lot of work. I didn’t quite realise how much work goes into organising and preparing something like that. What do you hope people will take away from this collaboration? A trans-owned apparel brand founded by Finnegan Shepard, Both& designs garments for transmasculine / gender non-conforming and non-binary people. The brand places the community at the centre of their work with the motto: “Don’t try to fit into a world that wasn’t built with you in mind. Create your own world.” From their breakout role in HBO’s record-breaking post-apocalyptic drama The Last Of Us, Bella Ramsey has continued to use their platform to champion the LGBTQIA+ community. This month sees the debut of their brand new collaboration with Both&, where they take on the role of Creative Director.

They want to continue this cycle with the next generation of actors; the protected is becoming the protector. “There’s a certain power that comes with being number one or two on the call sheet,” they say. “Now that I’m getting older, I’m looking forward to being able to help other people I work with – be the adult who can advocate for the younger person.” As Sag members are still on strike when we meet, Ramsey can’t answer any questions about the show or its upcoming second season. (Although they have decided not to post anything about the strike on social media, they say they “absolutely stand in solidarity – it’s urgent, it is dangerous that people can’t pay health insurance or pay their rent”.) They can, however, sing Pascal’s praises: “He’s great – having him throughout this last year makes going through that experience less lonely.” And what of entering this humongous new decade? “Being in my 20s feels disgusting,” they guffaw. “I never wanted to grow up because I thought you lose privileges when you do. But now I realise you gain them – you can vote and drive and be independent. I’m excited about the future, actually. Time was the first show I’ve done on my own. My mum didn’t come on set with me. It was a big experience in many ways. I was ready to move on my own. This is the first time I’ve been sent a script and asked if I want to do it without having to audition,” they say. “I find it very strange that they would just trust me like that.” It’s surprising that one of the most hailed young British actors of the decade would be so terrified after the years of praise they’ve received. “I absolutely do not feel more confident,” they explain. “I’m at the point where I can accept that I’m a good actor … But each part is completely different. There have been characters where I feel like they are already inside of me, but Kelsey was more external, which scared me.”
