About this deal

If you ever were watching The Maltese Falcon and wanted to know how it would be if Humphrey Bogart would get involved in something really, really weird, then this is your chance! Again, if you think you may have made a mistake coming this far, please feel free to back track now. Evenson never even bothers to describe the setting, and we’re provided zero clues as to where the story even occurs because it’s not important. These things, along with a list of cohesive elements that includes biblical violence, hilarious dialogue, and descriptive passages that will satisfy noir fans as well as fans of hardcore horror, come together to create the kind of narrative that slithers under the reader’s skin and fill his or her head with questions that can only be answered by continuing to read. The book gets crazier and crazier as Kline falls deeper into the rabbit hole that is the Brotherhood of Mutilation.

Last Days was first published in 2003 as a limited edition novella titled The Brotherhood of Mutilation. The Brotherhood of Mutilation makes for a great foil, probably because the idea isn't that far-fetched. Brian Evenson’s Last Days is simultaneously one of the greatest send-ups of the hardboiled detective novel and of the best celebrations of the brutal, violent, and mysterious nature of the genre. Asceticism, renunciation, abstinence, celibacy are still regarded as laudable goals by most churches, and even by regular, non-religious people. The story follows a detective kidnapped by a religious cult who believe amputations bring one closer to God. Except, it's hard to tell if the crime was even committed; every person Kline questions knows of another crime. The horrific nature of the brotherhood’s customs and the often very funny dialogue of some of its members makes for fascinating reading.

And if so, how can that morally defective person claim this horrifying religion is a force for love and peace after reading just this one passage? Kline será nuestro protagonista y de una manera que ni el mismo se imaginaba se convierte en el centro de toda esta loca trama. These are spaces that, more and more, become his spaces, as the outside world is increasingly dangerous to and suspicious of him. Just as the bloody mess of the brotherhood directly mirrors actual religious practice, so do other aspects of the book, such as its use of space: most of the book takes place in rooms or compounds, whether in a hospital or elsewhere. For you brave souls willing to wade into the abyss, I’d advise you to skip over that rat-bastard Peter Straub’s introduction, where he attempts to spoil the entire plot. Kline se ve desprovisto de una de sus manos, este hecho le lleva a sumirse en una depresión y en un bucle en el que no ve salida, hasta que un día La Hermandad de la Mutilación se pone en contacto con él para resolver un crimen. There is obviously a lot of anger directed towards organized religion in LAST DAYS, but there is a lot more to it.

You don't get much in the way of who the main character is but the little bit you do get about him from the time prior to when the book starts sounds kind of sucky for him, then as things progress it doesn't get much better. It consists of two parts of almost equal length, the first of which, “The Brotherhood of Mutilation”, was published in 2003, in a limited edition of 315 copies.Pages • 978-1-56689-416-6 Last Days follows Kline, a man forcibly recruited to solve the murder of the leader of an underground amputation cult. This is how it works in the rather unusual sect: The more amputations you have executed on your body, the higher you go up in the ranks. This is not a cheap addition to cash in on the success; although Brotherhood of Mutiliation can work on its own only together with its counterpart it achieves the full effect.
