About this deal

Prepare the ground – remove weeds and add Dalefoot Bulb Compost to the planting pit – which should be 3-4 times as deep as the bulb itself. Peat compost is usually more assured compost than peat free alternatives, though as manufacturers continue to create compost with different materials, this may change. Beware of any peat free composts that do not state their ingredients on the bag. What are the disadvantages of peat compost? So this December as we nudge that bit closer to Christmas, I urge some little acts of homemade giving and kindness in your local community with items that many of us gardeners will most likely already have to hand. Be it friends, family, neighbours or complete strangers, the cost will be near priceless with a feel good factor guaranteed. Many weeds can also provide a valuable habitat and ground cover for predators so wilder areas really help. I even grow a little patch of stinging nettles in my polytunnels for ladybirds and lacewings.

Mr Bland is trying to connect with farmers and develop strong and sustainable relationships by offering to take their wool too. This is also made into compost and he pays a premium of 40p/kg for hill breed wool.I find it a lot easier to use cup measures for this recipe, rather than weighing everything out. If you don’t have US cup measures, just use a tea cup. The best advice with peat-free composts is to use a well-researched, tried, and tested brand,' Victoria says. To make the beds, I cut the lawn on a low setting and rakeds the clippings, adding those to the compost heap. But the only way to know if a compost is good or bad is to grow plants in it and compare them - something we've been doing for more than 30 years. Old compost is often on sale - we send secret shoppers to buy our composts, who tell us if they find old compost on sale. It's a very common problem. We also know from our testing that old compost doesn't perform as well as fresh compost. To avoid this, buy bags that look new and aren't faded or heavy, which suggests they have been sitting around in bright sunshine for too long, or have been rained on regularly.

Aside from beekeeping being a fascinating and rewarding hobby, bee keeping plays an important role at Dalefoot. Human and environmental survival is reliant on the bees as pollinators, however bee numbers have been falling across the world with climate change, in-organic farming practices and habitat destruction the key causes. At Dalefoot we have continued our efforts to increase our wildlife habitats and biodiversity. We have been adding to our grass leys, tree planting, improving wild flower meadows and increasing our river corridors.

If you’re interested in finding out about my glasshouse, here’s a link to the article I wrote about my mini glasshouse. Peat is undeniably the best medium for growing plants,' says Garry Coward-Williams, Amateur Gardening Editor. 'It has the unique quality of being able to retain water and nutrients evenly from the top of the compost to the bottom, and this is what helps plants to thrive.' Plenty of sunshine makes plenty of sugar, mainly in the form of fructose which is found in the pericarp tissue of the tomato – that band of fruit flesh just under the skin. The acid content of the tomato is mainly found in the locular (pulp and seeds) centre of the fruit mostly in the form of citric acid with the actual amount influenced by the potash status of the plant.

You may see composts formulated for veg growing. These are very similar to multipurpose composts, but may have a slightly different balance of nutrients. Some are excellent, some are less good. Look at our grow bags results.

Tomato plants can be securely supported in three ways - strings, canes and spirals. Strings need to be soft yet strong enough to carry the weight. Most spools of jute on offer these days are 3 ply. Specialist suppliers, however, still make 5 ply, this is strong enough for all but record-breaking crops. If only a few plants are being grown the simplest way is to make two suitable lengths of 3 ply, twist it together and make a soft strong cord. The main disadvantage of peat compost is the environmental impact of its manufacture. It's a non-renewable resource, and the process of extracting it can release CO₂.Broadly speaking, cherries along with early varieties, given good growing conditions will produce ripe tomatoes 15 to 17 weeks after sowing. Some of the larger beef steaks will take a month longer and in a poor summer 22 to 24 weeks before the first fruits are ripe. Natural pest control is truly a climate change savvy gardener’s ally in so many ways and nature’s finest predators can be encouraged in with gusto in relatively simple ways for free. To turn your outside space into a more balanced eat and be eaten ecosystem means it is then harder for one potential plant muncher to proliferate. When you consider that greater risk of pest and disease is unfortunately one of the biggest challenges with our changing climate it has become more important than ever to encourage and protect biodiversity close to home. This general purpose compost is ideal for growing in pots, tubs and hanging baskets where water retention is key.
