About this deal

Milo’s drawings help him understand the world in ways that just talking may not, echoing the value of art therapy for children in processing difficult experiences, as well as reminding us of the value of drawing as expression for everyone. De la Peña's descriptive language and Robinson's innocent, endearing art make for another winning package .

The team behind the Newbery Medal winner and Caldecott Honor book Last Stop on Market Street and the award-winning New York Times bestseller Carmela Full of Wishes once again delivers a poignant and timely picture book that's sure to become an instant classic. But when the little boy gets off at the same stop and joins the same queue as him, Milo realises that you can't judge by appearances and that we are all more alike than we are different: both boys are visiting their mothers in prison. He watches the passengers and sees one ‘trawling through brown mounds of slush‘ to a ‘ cluttered apartment‘ with ‘ mewling cats’.The contrast between Milo’s crayon drawn imaginings, and thereafter his cluttered, pulsing train journey are skilled and telling. They have different questions and different ideas about the themes and it’s been great to explore them with them. And it is the masterful way Matt and Christian have intertwined this emotional journey with the train ride that makes this picture book timeless. I don't want to spoil the ending but it's a story about a boy named Milo and his sister who are riding the train, and on their ride, Milo draws pictures of the other passengers and makes up stories about who they are and where they're going.

There’s the whiskered man with the crossword puzzle; Milo imagines him playing solitaire in a cluttered apartment full of pets. In this rich, multilayered journey, the award-winning creators of Last Stop on Market Street celebrate a city’s kaleidoscope of scenes, offer a glimpse at a child’s experience with parental incarceration, and convey that child’s keen observations about his circumstances and surroundings. But when the boy in the suit gets off on the same stop as Milo--walking the same path, going to the exact same place--Milo realizes that you can't really know anyone just by looking at them. And then there’s the boy in the suit with the bright white sneakers; Milo imagines him arriving home to a castle with a drawbridge and a butler.

But this is one you'd want to know the content of before purchasing/reading, certainly without preparing yourself and checking the audience is ready for it.In addition, this is a thoughtful and sensitive representation of what it’s like to visit a parent in prison, and is an important book to share with mid to upper end primary aged children to open up a conversation about what prison is and the role it plays in society and within many families. The team behind the Newbery Medal winner and Caldecott Honor book Last Stop on Market Street and the award-winning New York Times bestseller Carmela Full of Wishes once again delivers a poignant and timely picture book that’s sure to become an instant classic. I remember sitting on the crowded carriages, just like Milo, and imagining the lives of those around me. It was such a pleasure to meet you both, and I really appreciated how smoothly and professionally you ran everything. The illustrations are beautiful, Robinson does such a beautiful job drawing small but important aspects of Black people and that's one of the reasons why I love his work.

Bronnie is so lovely with the boys and we also felt that having a man enthusing about the books set a great example. There’s the wedding-dressed woman with a little dog peeking out of her handbag; Milo imagines her in a grand cathedral ceremony. Milo Imagines the World is a thought-provoking picture book on being open-minded, told in an accessible way for young children.Encouraging children to see past clothes and appearances and imagine different lives and circumstances. There is an another, imagined world, an absence between siblings and then the weight of the journey end. You guys were so fab and Dawn was such a lovely presence in the schools - I will absolutely be in touch next time I'm in your neck of the woods. Matt De La Peña’s creative story with its wit and glorious, descriptive text is intricately realised through Christian Robinson’s rich pictures.
