But I won't spoil things for you, I will just say that the author definitely puts both his readers and his characters through quite a lot in this book. I loved this one so much, I immediately went out and bought the one set before this and am making my mission to get all the others in this series too! My only criticism would be that it might be difficult to read this as a stand-alone novel, you really have to read the whole series to get the best understanding of the characters and their relationships. Nancy, Raymond’s wife, wants his company but he spends most nights while on leave helping out with the fire watchers, along with other men and Cathy whose fiancé died at Dunkirk. With the fearless Raymond de Guise and his (poor suffering) wife Nancy, Vivienne who is left holding the baby and reeling from the events of Dunkirk.
