About this deal

I seem to be particularly interested in UK scandals from the 60s-70s - from Kim Philby to Profumo to Jeremy Thorpe, and now, John Stonehouse. But, fascinating though that is, scrupulously documented here and revealed in all its shoddy detail, this story is much more than that.

Due to his political status he was courted by the Czechoslovak government until the offer of extra cash was too much to refuse and he did indeed become an agent for the Czech security services. After a 6 year stint as a Justices Clerk, Julian, entered private practice in the Newcastle area in 1994 and soon gained a formidable reputation representing clients in a number of areas of work in particular criminal, family and public law. Hayes’ reputations has continued to flourish, seeing success in many high profile cases as well as the vice presidency of the London Criminal Courts Association. As for Czech intelligence officers who named him as a spy after they defected to the west, she argues that their word is not to be trusted either. Even for the strange 1970s, this stands out as one of the most surreal episodes of that turbulent decade.

Hang on to your seats - the Prime Minister has told the House of Commons Liaison Committee he believes his Illegal Migration Bill is “legal.

So, when things got really tough, he staged his own death by drowning (in Miami), only to be picked up a few months later (in Australia) when it was noted by an astute bank clerk that the same gentleman went to 2 different banks under 2 different names. most definitely a must read' DR SALEYHA AHSAN, filmmaker and journalist, Cambridge In November 1974, British MP and former cabinet minister John Stonehouse walked into the sea off a beach in Miami and disappeared, seemingly drowned. He has also gleaned much from family members and lawyers involved in the trial and from the trial documents and other government papers held in archives in the UK and Australia. Then he was found—on the other side of the world, in Australia—and his extraordinary story began to come to light. Christopher Andrew, the official historian of MI5, delivers the damning verdict that Stonehouse is “the only British politician (so far as is known) to have acted as a foreign agent while holding ministerial office”.A well-spoken Englishman transferring bags of cash between banks in Melbourne was brought to the attention of the Australian police, who initially thought they might have stumbled across Lord Lucan, who had also gone missing recently. This book is a brief account of the life of John Stonehouse, with particular emphasis on his botched attempt to fake his own suicide (and the subsequent trial). Julian is senior partner in the London firm Berris Law and has been involved in some of the most high profile criminal cases over the last 20 years including the "Ricin case" in 2005, the Graff jewellery robbery and the Vietnamese lorry case in 2019. He advises individuals and corporates in relation to fraud and corruption investigations by the SFO, enforcement actions by the FCA (insider dealing and market abuse) and offences under the customs and excise legislation prosecuted by HMRC.

This idea seems to have been inspired by Frederick Forsyth’s bestselling thriller, The Day of the Jackal, in which the assassin travels on a series of phoney passports. You’ve been living in London illegally for the past two years, having been brought from Algeria to the UK by your father and then left with a friend. He had faked his death by leaving the sea along the coast and changing into dry clothes, which he had covertly deposited at another hotel. In addition to his mission, he spends the rest of the time talking about music and superheroes while learning how to salsa dance. He is a Higher Rights Advocate (criminal and civil) and a Court and Police Station duty solicitor and a member of the Law Society’s’ Child Panel (having been a member since 1998).
