About this deal

Finally they can gather at each other's houses with no restrictions, they can go to the pub and enjoy a drink and they can even have weddings again!

I adore that film and that pettiness and suspicion of newcomers is something that is relatable to anyone who has ever been friends with a group of women and I liked how this subplot was resolved. He also owns a dog, Arthur who also becomes Nell's companion in a way as Nell spends a lot of time with Arthur and takes him on walks. Alongside the love story is the wonderful unlikely friendship that sparks between Nell and Cricket, an elderly lady who is just a marvelous character! This author always deals with real topics, and they are dealt with sensitively and in a way that breaks the taboo around subjects. All her single friends are now married with children, sky-high rents force her to rent a room in a stranger’s house and in a world of perfect Instagram lives, she feels like a f--k up.

Whilst sharing the flat with not only Edward and their dog, but also his two teenage sons, a surprise pregnancy test throws Nells World into a spin. As they increasingly spend time together Nell and Cricket help other heal through the struggles as they both move on in their new places in life.I wanted to hang out with her and be whatever she needed - drinking buddy, sounding board, friend date. I would like to thank Tandem Collective UK, Pan Macmillan and Alexandra Potter for sending me a hardback copy of ‘Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up’ as part of the Tandem Collective UK readalong; I would also like to thank NetGalley for allowing me to access a digital copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review. Confessions of a Forty-Something F**k Up is a funny, heartwarming commentary on how society norms -particularly for women- and pressure from the media can make us feel like failures, when actually we’re not.

Yes, it glosses over certain issues, yes, it might be very 'middle class' in places but it's a good story with enough depth to have kept me engaged throughout. However, this is quite a long book and there were plenty of parts within the story were a little predictable. Together they help each other heal their aching hearts, cope with the loss of the lives they had planned, and push each other into new adventures and unexpected joys. Whilst I could relate to Nell’s struggle to fit in with her old friends, I found the rivalry between Nell and her best friend’s new best friend, Annabel, a little childish and cliché, particularly when Annabel ‘forgets’ to invite Nell to a party. The story of Nell Stevens’ struggle through her imperfect, messy life doesn’t just make brilliant fiction, it’s turning into a cultural revolution!

This book sounds awesome…I have been wanting to read a book by Alexandra Potter for years and the one I wanted to start with is so hard to find, perhaps because it could be using the title Who’s That Girl and not The Two Lives of Charlotte Merryweather. Michaelides takes a literary turn in his latest novel, employing an unreliable narrator, the structure of classical drama, and a self-conscious eye to dismantling the locked-room mystery. But when she starts a secret podcast and forms an unlikely friendship with Cricket, an eighty-something widow, things begin to change.I also really liked that one character, who I definitely thought was going to play a more significant role just because that’s what always seems to happen in books like this, actually didn’t. And while the book could have been predictable – an easy path for Nell and Edward’s love story – it wasn’t, and for that I was grateful.
